What is the IDC Staff Instructor Course?

Instructors often ask questions about the PADI IDC Staff Instructor course and rating, so here are a few things you want to keep in mind if this is a step you are considering !

What is the IDC Staff rating?

In order to enroll in the course obtain the IDC Staff Instructor rating (also known as IDCS), you will need to be a PADI MSDT and an EFR Instructor.

The main responsibility of a Staff Instructor is to assist on PADI Instructor Development Courses and help Instructor candidates during their course. Therefore, it requires a good understanding of the dive theory, the PADI system and its standards, as well of course as great teaching skills and a lot of patience!

When is a good time to take the Staff Instructor Course?

It is recommended to have a decent amount of teaching experience as a PADI Instructor before you move onto the IDC Staff course. As a Staff Instructor you will recommend teaching techniques to future instructors, so you will need to have a good knowledge of all PADI courses, the skills and theory they entail.

You also need to be confident in your skills and knowledge as the instructor candidates will often come to you with questions regarding their assignments, dive theory or other components of the IDC course.

What is the course like?

We recommend to take the course in conjunction with staffing a full PADI IDC, so you get to apply everything first hand and see how the course goes!

Before the IDC itself, you will spend a couple of days with your Course Director to go over topics such as teaching methods, the standards and components of the IDC, the scoring system. Then by assisting straight away on the IDC itself you can get a good refresher on your skills and theory, as well as applying scoring methods and helping out the instructors to be. An important part of this process is also to get feedback and debriefs from your Course Director, so you can get confident in your new role as a IDC Staff Instructor!

We offer the IDCS course all year long, get in touch with us for more information!
